Starting at the parking lot on West Deep Creek Road, the hike can be done in either direction.
Within minutes of the start of this hike, you’ll encounter the enchanting Toms Branch Falls, a tall cascade flowing gracefully down the mountainside. About 0.7 miles from the parking lot, you’ll reach the intersection of the Deep Creek and Indian Creek Trails, marking the start of the loop portion.
Opting for the counter-clockwise direction, turn right onto the Indian Creek Trail while the Deep Creek Trail veers left over a footbridge. As you follow the loop, keep your eyes peeled for two more small waterfalls along the Deep Creek and Loop Trails.
The entire hike typically takes around three hours but take your time to soak in the sights, snap photos, and create cherished memories!
Juney Whank Falls
This loop-within-a-loop is part of the Deep Creek Loop covered above and can be done as an extension to that hike if you’re still pumping with energy!
As you veer off the Deep Creek Trail, you’ll find yourself on the Juney Whank Loop Trail, a traditional hiking trail rather than an old road.
Brace yourself for a short yet invigorating uphill climb of 0.2 miles until you reach an intersection with the Deep Creek Horse Trail. Here’s where things get a bit tricky: regardless of whether you continue straight or take a right at the fork, signs will indicate that you’re on the Deep Creek Horse Trail. To keep it simple, there’s a clear “Falls” sign that ensures you stay on the path to witness the awe-inspiring Juney Whank Falls. Just keep moving straight ahead.
Near the first “Falls” sign, you’ll notice another sign pointing left, leading you down a steep hill. This is the continuation of the Juney Whank Loop Trail, even though it lacks signs with that specific name.
If you continue straight, the trail will keep you on the Deep Creek Horse Trail. The difference between the two trails is that Juney Whank Loop Trail takes you below the falls, while the Deep Creek Horse Trail encircles above it. The hike itself is a spectacle, guiding you through a shady, aromatic forest adorned with balsam fir and rare, high-altitude plants.
To begin your journey, head to the overlook off the Blue Ridge Parkway at MP 422, southwest of Asheville. As the trail winds westward, glimpses of the mountain’s rugged facade will appear between towering balsam fir trees. Just before a tunnel, the paved trail veers south, immersing you in a shady forest and signaling the start of your ascent.
Remember to stay on the designated trail at all times to preserve the fragile ecosystem, home to rare and delicate plant species. Even a few steps off the trail could cause irreversible damage to this beautiful forest.
At approximately 0.3 miles, the paved trail ends and you should veer right. The ascent continues at 0.4 miles, with stone stairs awaiting your final push to the summit. Finally, at 0.45 miles, you’ll conquer the jagged, rocky precipice marking the mountain’s pinnacle where an enchanting experience awaits!
Covering just under a mile round trip, this trail manages to pack an abundance of awe-inspiring views and mesmerizing forest beauty into a short distance.
